Chief of Police Kenneth Berkowitz

Chief of Police Kenneth Berkowitz joined the department in 1992 as a patrolman, fulfilling a lifelong dream of becoming a police officer. He worked in the patrol division for five years before becoming a sergeant in 1997 and later a lieutenant in 1999. Six years later, in February 2005, he was appointed the thirteenth chief of the Canton Police Department.

Education & Qualifications

Chief Berkowitz holds bachelors degree in Sociology from North Adams State College and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Anna Maria College. The chief is also a 2004 graduate of the FBI National Academy located in Quantico Virginia. In addition to the aforementioned credentials, he holds degrees from the Drug Unit Commander Academy, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Group Supervisor Institute, and the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar. He has also lectured at the United States Postal Inspection Service Team Leader Conference, the FBI National Academy Associates and the center for adult learning at Boston College.

Past Experience

Prior to his current position as a control chief of the METROLEC Mobile Operations Unit, the chief served as Commander of the Metro SWAT Regional Response Team. Additionally, he is a member of the Executive Board for the Greater Boston Police Council and the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association. Professional affiliates include being a member of the Anti-Defamation League’s Executive Committee On Civil Rights.
